World Book Day!

Books, books, books!

March 1st is World Book Day, and being a bookworm and aspiring author, I figured I would write about the books (and series) that have impacted me - so far!
These are older and current books that will always have a special place in my heart, no matter the amount of times I have read them, placed them aside for a little bit, or wherever I end up in life.
(The enjoyment of these books is based off of the amount of times I've read them).

As a child I remember going to Costco and there was this brightly colored book called Tokyo Mew Mew. The cover was pink and the girl on it looked like some cat person. This would soon become my favorite manga, and the path to my enjoyment for anime when I became a teenager.

The series, by Reiko Yoshida and illustrated by Mia Ikumi, is centered around these five girls who were part of an accidental experiment where the genes of endangered animals were fused with their DNA. Come to find out they also have magical powers and must protect earth from alien-like creatures. The main character of this girl group, Ichigo Momomya, must search for the remaining girls in order to strengthen their abilities and work as a team. And of course there is also romance and drama involved.

The next book is The Possibility of Fireflies by Dominique Paul. I read this book so many times in middle school and even did a book report on it. I was so intrigued by the main character's older sister, Gwen, and wanted to be everything that she possessed. She was a stereotypical punk and didn't take shit from anyone.

This book is set in 1987 - and for a while I was obsessed with the 80s because of this - but the premise is a coming of age story about two sisters, Ellie and Gwen, who live with their abusive mother. Their parents divorced, and their mother convinces them that he wants nothing to do with either of them. Ellie spends a lot of time alone, especially when her mother "accidentally" locks her own children out of their house. During her times of darkness, a boy named Leo moves across the street, and since he is older Ellie finds him interesting and hopes that his rockstar lifestyle will save her from her unhappiness. But he teaches her a very important lesson - no one can save you except for yourself. During one terrifying night, Ellie decides to do just that.

Now, for these next two they really shaped my time in high school since I would read each one over and over, one after the other. Just Listen by Sarah Dessen and Venomous by Christopher Krovatin.
After reading Sarah Dessen, I delved into her other books and she quickly became one of my favorite authors, but no other book of hers has stuck with me like Just Listen.

Just Listen is about a girl in high school named Annabelle, which follows her experiences of having a sister with bulimia, broken friendships due to rumors, and meeting Owen - a boy with anger issues who is working on bettering himself. This mysterious, music obsessed boy teaches Annabelle to listen to herself, where she is able to stand up to the rumors about her and speak the truth.

Venomous is about Locke, who struggles with anger issues, and finds solace in the comic book villain Venom. this book is centered around Locke's attempt at getting help, as well as him meeting Renee, who also struggles with mental illness. This book is honestly wild from start to finish, and I think this is the first book that ever made me cry and I surly stayed up all night to finish it.

Another book, well series actually, that consumed a good portion of my high school career was the Gossip Girl series by Cecily von Ziegesar. Specifically, the last book was the one to hit me. It was such a satisfying and heartwarming ending - completely different from the television series. I'm pretty sure I've read the series twice, but I'm definitely overdue for a re-read.

There they are, all 13 books. For longest time I only had the first 8 I think, which was very infuriating. And then of course, I never knew there was a 13th and bought it immediately.

These next two books are fairly recent reads as I read them in 2017.

milk & honey by Rupi Kaur:

Aside from poetry that I have read during my time in school, this is the first poetry book I read and the one to really get me into this style of poetry, leading me to compulsively buy more that have been published by Andrews Mcmeel. For anyone who is not familiar with this poetry collection, milk & honey is about heartbreak, love, loss, femininity, and abuse.

Finally, the last book/series is Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas:

Many people have given up on this series because of the love interest, but I refuse to give up. This is the series that sparked my determination to write my own fantasy series and create my own world. Celaena Sardothian, in books 1 and 2, is the type of person I want to be - strong and to not care about anything, aside from those who are important to her. She is an assassin with a tragic backstory, which leads her to making some big decisions, sometimes without her companions even knowing. I am currently on the 5th book, and still have the 6th book left. The las t book of the series will be out in October of this year, and I truly hope there will be a satisfying ending or else I will be absolutely crushed. Although I will stand by this series, I do acknowledge the flaws in it, and am also not please with the entirety of Heir of Fire, and the ending of Queen of Shadows. Nonetheless, this series has truly impacted my life, and Sarah J. Maas has easily become my favorite author.
(My favorite from this series is actually the prequel, which I do not have with me currently to take a picture of).

Here are some honorable mentions: (and I'm sure this list will keep growing as I continue reading more)

Also, here is what I am currently reading, and almost finished with:

This is by one of my favorite YouTubers, Connie Glynn, aka noodlerella. It is her debut novel of a series, and I already want book 2!

I could literally talk about books all day, and this will not be the only book blog post I make, but I'm going to go now. For those of you who have midterms this week I wish you luck, and if anyone has an incredibly early spring break like me I hope you find lots of time to relax!

Bye
